We said our goodbyes to Chris, Choi, Sam and Will this morning, leaving with a cupboard full of fruit from the garden, and drove back in to a very quiet Nelson compared with yesterday. It was the first day of the New Zealand National Championsips and we hung out at the Assembly area for the Sprint race at NMIT, a much lower key affair than our JK back home will be today, when it finally arrives!
Tony went off to his start and I wandered a bit and was approached by two women who had connections with orienteering both in NZ and back home in the UK. It was lovely to chat about events and people we all jointly knew and, before I knew it, it was time for me to go to the start for my run.
I made a costly early error on my run but I enjoyed the outing and felt better than I thought I would have done with the cold. Tony has had a heavier dose than me and felt it out on his course, not being as high up in the results as he had hoped.
Afterwards we had a third approach, this time from blipper Tanya living in Nelson. She had been told by rainie and PaulaJ that we were here and had commented on my previous day's blip. I suggested that she might get an orienteering blip so she had come down with her camera to find us. We swapped blip stories and life stories for a while before it was time for us to get on the road south to St Arnaud which is the location for the next two days of orienteering.
The drive down through Wai-Iti Valley was both quiet and picturesque and so we made good time arriving here at the DOC Kerr Bay Campground late afternoon.
This is yet another beautiful spot with the campground being on the shores of Lake Rotoiti which has extensive views of the St Arnaud Range at the far end of the lake. We will have to do some exploring after events over the next couple of days.
The campground is very quiet and our section is called 'Bellbird'. I think I heard one earlier so hopefully, as we are in the midst of woodland, we may be in for a dawn chorus treat?
